The German AIDS Service Organization is a non-profit association with the mission of informing and educating about HIV and AIDS. It uses multiple websites with different areas of focus – including the prevention campaign, “ICH WEISS WAS ICH TU” (IWWIT) (“I Know What I’m Doing”). On iwwit.de, the German AIDS Service Organization offers comprehensive information on LGBTQ+-health-related topics.

Since the IWWIT campaign was launched in 2008, it has had its own website. But, just being visible is not enough. “We want the information that we offer our target audiences to always be up to date – not only in terms of content and language, but also technologically and visually – this is a basic requirement for our success,” says Tim Schomann, IWWIT Campaign Director at The German AIDS Service Organization. “This is because the speed at which the standards of technology and the viewing habits of users are changing is only increasing.”

When those of us at codafish took over support for the IWWIT website in March 2021, there were two topics at the top of the to-do list: The search function on the website needed to be improved and the visual presentation of the counseling services offered by the German AIDS Service Organization needed an upgrade. Further optimizations would be taken care of step-by-step as a part of monthly support.

The IWWIT campaign website is based on Drupal, one of the world’s best-known content management systems and a guarantee for excellent performance, intuitive usability and a high-level of security.

However, Drupal is very complex because it provides many free extensions that can be used to customize the system.

In order to improve the functionality of the www.iwwit.de website, we first checked all of the settings in Drupal and brought them up to date, uninstalled superfluous modules and straightened out the database (repositories).

And we are constantly identifying new areas, on the various digital channels of the IWWIT campaign, in need of attention,” says Tim Schomann.
